Safe gun storage prevents suicide

Any honest look at suicide has to look at the role of guns. The sad and scary truth is that guns make it much easier and quicker for a person to kill themselves — making it much less likely that they'll have the opportunity to get the support they need and change their mind. This is especially true for teenagers who have access to a family members' gun.

Any honest look at suicide has to look at the role of guns. The sad and scary truth is that guns make it much easier and quicker for a person to kill themselves — making it much less likely that they'll have the opportunity to get the support they need and change their mind. This is especially true for teenagers who have access to a family members' gun.

The research is clear: unsafe gun storage increases the incidence of suicide, and laws requiring use of gun locks are effective at preventing suicides.

Preventing suicide is one of the many reasons we need legislation that requires gun owners to store their weapons safely and responsibly.

Can you chip in to help us pass common-sense safe gun storage legislation in Oregon?

Here are some of the facts about gun storage and suicide:

  • Most teen suicides are committed with a family member's gun. Making it harder for teens to access a firearm will save lives.
  • Teen suicide is on the rise — especially with a firearm. Access to a gun increases the risk someone will attempt suicide.

It doesn't have to be this way. Laws requiring guns to be locked are effective at preventing suicide:

  • Massachusetts is the only state in the nation that requires firearms be stored with a locking device in place in all cases when they are not in use. In Massachusetts, the overall suicide death rate among youth is 35% below the national average.
  • States with a law in place that required handguns to be locked at least in certain circumstances have 40% fewer suicides per capita and 68% fewer firearm suicides per capita than states without these laws. This correlation is unchanged even after controlling for the effects of poverty, population density, age, education and race/ethnicity.

Requiring safe storage of guns is critical to preventing suicide.
