Preventing suicide by reducing access to guns

Gun safety is a public health issue. And this month, I was honored to introduce Catherine Barber at the Oregon Public Health Association's annual conference.

Cathy directs the Means Matter center at Harvard, which studies the links between suicide prevention and access to guns, and advises governments on gun safety policy.

Cathy's work confirms what the vast majority of Oregonians – gun owners and non-owners – already know: safe gun storage will prevent suicide and save lives.

Oregon suffers a 37 percent higher suicide rate than the national average. And recent figures show that 83 percent of Oregon suicides are from firearms compared with 51 percent nationally.

We can change that.

We can reduce suicides in Oregon through public awareness and new policies requiring that all firearms are properly secured.

We must support safe gun storage legislation that will reduce suicide in Oregon.
